The Médoc is the left bank of the Gironde, home to the great châteaux classified in 1855. The Médoc's graves (gravels) provide perfect drainage for Cabernet Sauvignon, which here achieves its noblest expressions. The communal appellations – Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe – are synonymous with excellence.
