Silex 2012 — Blanc Fume de Pouilly

Annata 20120.75L13%Pouilly-Fumé AOC

Silex is the most famous and sought-after Sauvignon Blanc in the world. It is born from the oldest vines of the domaine at Saint-Andelain on an exceptional soil of flint (silex) — the firestone that signs every bottle with an iodine-tinged mineral profile unique in the world. Didier Dagueneau, who passed away in 2008, revolutionised the world's Sauvignon; today it is Louis-Benjamin who leads the domaine. The 2012 is an extraordinary vintage for the Loire: exceptional tension, minerality and concentration.

Insight

Get to know the wine

The Silex 2012 from Domaine Didier Dagueneau is born from the oldest vines of the estate at Saint Andelain, on a unique flint (silex) soil — a siliceous rock that gives the wine inimitable mineral and iodine notes. Hand harvest, low yields (~45 hl/ha).

Fermentation in oak: an unusual practice for Sauvignon, which lends complexity and structure without masking the terroir. Long elevage, no filtration. Since 2008 it has been Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau who produces the wine, with the same visionary approach as his father.

The 2012 in the Loire was a vintage of exceptional vibrancy and minerality — among the best of recent decades for the Pouilly-Fume and Sancerre appellations.

The Silex 2012 is extraordinarily complex: still young, but already monstrously good. To drink now with decanting, at its best between 2025 and 2035.

Sommelier's note

"Flint, aromatic herbs, Bosc pear and melon on a nose of great luminosity. On the palate it is extraordinarily opulent with an almost oily texture, smoke, white peach, Gravenstein apple and absolute minerality. A structure that projects this wine well beyond the coming decade. Winedoctor: 'effortless in its style — all flint, tension and minerality, a simply stunning showing.'"
