Giacomo Conterno's Monfortino is one of the most legendary wines in Italy and the world: it is made only in exceptional vintages from the finest grapes of the Cascina Francia cru in Serralunga d'Alba, and ages for over six years in large Austrian oak casks before release. The 2008 — an extraordinarily late harvest, begun on 29 October — produced one of the most balanced and harmonious Monfortino ever to leave the winery.

Insight

Get to know the wine

Giacomo Conterno's Barolo Riserva Monfortino 2008 is one of the most iconic expressions of Nebbiolo in the world. Produced exclusively in exceptional vintages, it comes from the Cascina Francia cru, in the heart of Serralunga d'Alba.

The 2008 is a rare vintage for balance and precision: a late harvest, begun at the end of October, allowed a slow and complete ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic integrity. Vinification rigorously follows tradition, with long macerations and prolonged ageing for over six years in large oak casks.

The aromatic profile is refined and chiselled: withered rose, citrus, liquorice and tobacco merge into a bouquet of great complexity. On the palate it stands out for its compactness and elegance, with perfectly integrated tannins and an extraordinary sense of balance.

The finish is extremely long, vibrant and mineral. A wine already enjoyable today, but with an evolutionary potential that extends for decades.

Sommelier's note

The Monfortino 2008 is an extraordinary exercise in balance and silkiness: dried rose petals and oranges on the nose, a full yet compact and taut body, perfectly managed tannins. One of the latest harvests in Conterno's history yielded a wine of rare purity and finesse, already splendid today but with an evolutionary potential that easily extends to 2048. One of the most beloved Monfortino of recent decades — James Suckling: 99 points.
