Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2012
Clos de Tart is the largest monopole Grand Cru of the Cote de Nuits: 7.53 hectares entirely enclosed within Cistercian walls at Morey-Saint-Denis, owned by a single domaine since 1141. The 2012 is the last vintage vinified by Sylvain Pitiot, winemaker-director for over thirty years, and also marks the first harvest with ploughing done entirely by horse. Yield halved to 14.3 hl/ha: only ~12,000 bottles produced, half of a normal vintage. WA 97.

Insight
Get to know the wine
Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2012 comes from a difficult but sublime vintage: the May frosts halved yields to 14.3 hl/ha - barely half of normal production - with harvest in two phases: 19 September for the riper parcel (14.5° potential alcohol) and 28 September-1 October for the rest (13.6-13.8°).
First vintage with the entire vineyard worked by horse. Mixed vinification: some lots whole-cluster, others completely destemmed; ageing in 100% new French oak barriques.
The profile is one of rare purity and grace - fresher and more vital than previous vintages, with a strawberry and raspberry fruit that captures the essence of Pinot Noir.
Finer tannins than in recent vintages, aristocratic elegance, a finish of extraordinary persistence. To be drunk from 2020, at its best through 2045.
Sommelier's note
“"Pure and feminine: fresh raspberry, just-picked strawberry, pressed rose petals in a bouquet of great intensity and pinoté. On the palate it is structured with very fine tannins, tensile and aristocratic, with a bright focus and an extraordinarily long finish. Neal Martin (WA): 'quite brilliant articulation of the Clos - bon vin! Drink 2020-2045'."”
