Chateau d'Yquem 2003 — Magnum 1.5 L
Chateau d'Yquem is the only 1er Cru Superieur in all of Bordeaux — a uniqueness recognised in the 1855 classification that no other wine in the world shares. The 2003, the year of the great European drought, produced one of the richest, most concentrated and opulent Yquems in modern history: buttery notes, honey, coconut and candied fruit of extraordinary density. Ageing 28 months in new barriques. In the Magnum it evolves even more slowly and harmoniously.

Insight
Get to know the wine
The Chateau d'Yquem 2003 Magnum is born from 113 hectares of vineyard at Sauternes (80% Semillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc) with proverbially low yields: about one glass per vine.
Production relies entirely on Botrytis Cinerea ('noble rot') which concentrates sugars, glycerine and aromas by consuming the water of the grape. The harvest takes place in multiple passes (tries successives) with berry-by-berry selection.
Natural fermentation in barrique — it can last up to 6 months. Ageing 28 months in new barriques. Yquem is not produced in vintages that are not sufficiently excellent.
The 2003 was a vintage of extreme drought across all of Europe — extraordinary for the concentration of Yquem. Botrytis Cinerea had ideal conditions, producing a wine of density and sweetness almost without precedent in the modern era.
In the Magnum format it evolves at a reduced pace: still decades of evolution ahead, at its best between 2030 and 2080.
Sommelier's note
“"Intense gold with deep amber reflections. Buttery notes of honey, dried and candied fruit, coconut, pink pepper and crème pâtissière. Extremely rich, dense and full-bodied, soft yet with great freshness that balances the concentration. A finish of almost infinite persistence. The warm 2003 vintage makes this Yquem one of the most opulent and accessible ever. In the Magnum: still decades of evolution ahead."”
