Barolo Monvigliero 2019

Annata 20190.75L14%Barolo DOCG

Monvigliero is the most important cru of Verduno and one of the most prestigious of the entire Barolo appellation. The 2019 is the second vintage ever produced by Vietti from this vineyard — the estate debuted with the 2018 after acquiring the parcel directly from Fabio Alessandria of Comm. G.B. Burlotto. A Barolo of Burgundian grace, floral and perfumed, with a unique vinification using 60% whole clusters.

Insight

Get to know the wine

Vietti's Barolo Monvigliero 2019 is born from the most celebrated cru of Verduno: a small hill with a South/South-West exposure at 240-300 m above sea level, soils of Sant'Agata Marls — clay, silt and sand deposited 7-11 million years ago — which give the Nebbiolo a floral and fine profile compared to Burgundy.

The vines have an average age of 44 years and a density of 4,500 plants per hectare. Harvest on 8 October 2019; 60% vinified as whole clusters, 40% destemmed, 3 weeks of maceration, malolactic in wood, 24 months in large casks of Slavonian and French oak.

The profile is unmistakably elegant and airy: wild strawberry, rose, hibiscus, cherry and sweet spices on the nose. On the palate it is 'almost weightless' as Wine Enthusiast says — succulent fruit, silken tannins and a saline-mineral finish of long persistence.

The Barolo of Verduno in its finest and most feminine expression. To be opened from 2025, at its best between 2028 and 2040.

Sommelier's note

Aromas of wild strawberry, hibiscus, raspberry, rose and fine spices on a profile of great lightness. On the palate it is almost free of edges: elegant, with silky tannins, perfect acidity and a saline, persistent finish. Vinous: 'stunning, total stunner'. WA 97 - Wine Enthusiast 97 - JS 96. At its best from 2025, with potential through to 2050.
