Corton-Charlemagne
Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru for sale on Vinoly: Bonneau du Martray and Coche-Dury. The white Grand Cru of the Corton hill, a monumental Chardonnay that asks for ten years of cellaring and lasts thirty.
The hill of Corton
Corton-Charlemagne covers the upper, south-western part of the Corton hill, between Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses: white marl-limestone soils facing south-west. Legend says Charlemagne had white grapes planted there so as not to stain his beard with red.
The style
A Chardonnay of power and austerity, closed when young, opening into flint, candied citrus, honey and brown butter. Bonneau du Martray, with almost ten hectares in a single block, is the reference domaine; Coche-Dury makes tiny quantities, among the most sought-after bottles in the world.
